Self-Service vs Drop-Off Laundry in Brooklyn — Which One Saves You More Time?

Walk into Fast N Clean on a Sunday afternoon and you'll see both kinds of customers side by side: someone loading their own clothes into a Dexter washer, and someone next to them handing a bag over the counter to our staff. Two completely different ways to do laundry — both valid, both come with trade-offs.

Here's how to figure out which one is right for your situation, this week.

The basic difference

Self-service

You bring the laundry, you operate the machines, you fold. We provide the equipment, the detergent vending, the Wi-Fi, and the safe well-lit space. You're in control of every step.

Drop-off (wash & fold)

You hand us the bag. We weigh it, wash it, dry it, fold it. You come back (or we deliver) when it's ready. You trade control for time.

Comparison: cost

Typical 20-pound load in Brooklyn 2026 prices:

Self-service at Fast N Clean

  • Wash (front-load Dexter, ~20 lb capacity): $5.50
  • Dry (commercial dryer, 50¢ per 6 min, ~30 min for 20 lb): $2.50
  • Detergent (vending, optional): $1.50
  • Total: ~$9.50

Drop-off at Fast N Clean

  • 20 lb × $1.29/lb = $25.80

Self-service is roughly 1/3 the price. But that's only the dollar cost.

Comparison: time

Self-service

  • Drive/walk to the shop: ~10 min each way
  • Wait for wash cycle: 35 min
  • Switch loads, wait for dry: 30 min
  • Fold and pack: 15 min
  • Total: ~100 min of your time

Drop-off

  • Drive or walk to drop off: ~10 min each way + 5 min counter
  • Wait at home (next-day pickup): zero active time
  • Pick up: another 10 min each way
  • Total: ~35 min of your time

With pickup & delivery

  • ~3 minutes total — book online, leave bag at door, receive it back

Comparison: control

Self-service wins on:

  • Choosing your own detergent (eco, hypoallergenic, scented, fragrance-free)
  • Splitting whites/colors/delicates exactly how you want
  • Knowing nothing got mixed up with someone else's load
  • Drying time and heat (you control)
  • Folding style (your own)

Drop-off wins on:

  • Hand-folding by trained staff (most people fold worse than we do)
  • Pre-treatment of stains (we catch and treat what you might miss)
  • No mixing of fabrics (we sort better than most home folks)
  • Returning bedding properly (sheets folded, not balled up)

When each makes sense

Pick self-service when:

  • You enjoy the meditative routine (some people do — bring a book, an album, a podcast)
  • Cost matters and you have 90 minutes free
  • You have very specific preferences (eco detergent, no fabric softener, exact temperatures)
  • You're between apartments and just need a wash
  • It's 1am and you're a shift worker who's wide awake

Pick drop-off when:

  • You'd rather pay a few dollars to skip 90 minutes
  • You have a big load (over 25 lb is a pain to handle yourself)
  • Your fold technique is "crumple and toss" — let pros do it
  • You'd rather be at work, with family, at the gym, or sleeping
  • You're sick, post-surgery, traveling, or just busy

Pick pickup & delivery when:

  • You're inside our 5 ZIPs (11230, 11204, 11210, 11229, 11223)
  • You have 20+ lb (delivery has a 20 lb minimum)
  • You'd genuinely pay $0.30/lb more to skip the round-trip to the shop entirely

The honest math

Average wage in NYC: ~$30/hour. Self-service saves ~$16 vs drop-off, but costs ~65 extra minutes. That's $14.80 of your time. Drop-off is the rational choice for most people most of the time — but self-service makes sense when cost dominates or you prefer the control.

The combo move

Some of our regulars do this: drop off the heavy stuff (bedding, towels, gym clothes) and self-service the rest (work shirts they want pressed a specific way, delicates they don't want mixed). Best of both worlds — quick wash on what matters to you, professionally handled on what doesn't.

Try whichever — or both

Self-service is open 24/7 at 1909 Avenue M. Drop-off is staffed 7am-9pm at our counter. Pickup & delivery is online 24/7. Whatever your week looks like, one of these fits.
