Walk into Fast N Clean on a Sunday afternoon and you'll see both kinds of customers side by side: someone loading their own clothes into a Dexter washer, and someone next to them handing a bag over the counter to our staff. Two completely different ways to do laundry — both valid, both come with trade-offs.
Here's how to figure out which one is right for your situation, this week.
The basic difference
Self-service
You bring the laundry, you operate the machines, you fold. We provide the equipment, the detergent vending, the Wi-Fi, and the safe well-lit space. You're in control of every step.
Drop-off (wash & fold)
You hand us the bag. We weigh it, wash it, dry it, fold it. You come back (or we deliver) when it's ready. You trade control for time.

When each makes sense
Pick self-service when:
- You enjoy the meditative routine (some people do — bring a book, an album, a podcast)
- Cost matters and you have 90 minutes free
- You have very specific preferences (eco detergent, no fabric softener, exact temperatures)
- You're between apartments and just need a wash
- It's 1am and you're a shift worker who's wide awake
Pick drop-off when:
- You'd rather pay a few dollars to skip 90 minutes
- You have a big load (over 25 lb is a pain to handle yourself)
- Your fold technique is "crumple and toss" — let pros do it
- You'd rather be at work, with family, at the gym, or sleeping
- You're sick, post-surgery, traveling, or just busy
Pick pickup & delivery when:
- You're inside our 5 ZIPs (11230, 11204, 11210, 11229, 11223)
- You have 20+ lb (delivery has a 20 lb minimum)
- You'd genuinely pay $0.30/lb more to skip the round-trip to the shop entirely
The honest math
Average wage in NYC: ~$30/hour. Self-service saves ~$16 vs drop-off, but costs ~65 extra minutes. That's $14.80 of your time. Drop-off is the rational choice for most people most of the time — but self-service makes sense when cost dominates or you prefer the control.
The combo move
Some of our regulars do this: drop off the heavy stuff (bedding, towels, gym clothes) and self-service the rest (work shirts they want pressed a specific way, delicates they don't want mixed). Best of both worlds — quick wash on what matters to you, professionally handled on what doesn't.
